There is an old Hawaiian adage that says "Paddle the Canoe." Simply put, it is an encouragement to initiate and take charge of the present moment and situation so that the canoe is safely and expediently guided to its destination. This is the motto by which I live my life. In most circumstances where leadership is needed I will step up and take the initiative to "paddle the canoe." However, in order to be wise about my leadership opportunities, I always consider whether the project is within my skill set, whether I have the necessary time and energy to wholly dedicate myself to the cause, and whether there is another who would be a better fit to lead. My strongest leadership initiatives have been in circumstances where administration, organization, planning, and strategic thinking has been needed. Certainly, I am always willing to follow another, as building from my self-awareness, I am cognizant of my competencies and those areas in which growth is necessary, yet to follow another he or she must possess the characteristics of confidence, trust, honesty, delegation, and most importantly, a well-ordered and thought out plan. A ship without a rudder is utterly lost, and a leader without a vision fares no better.
